Choosing SEO plugins for WordPress.

Choosing SEO plugins for WordPress.

As the owner of a WordPress website, sooner or later the issue of online referencing and SEO plugins becomes a major factor in improving the visibility of your platform and for a good strategy of seo.

Whatever the subject or objective behind a website, search engine optimisation (SEO) is an essential step in developing its online presence. In the life cycle of a website, SEO has an impact on the choices to be made at every stage of the development process and the long-term future of the platform.

Indeed, with the constant development of SEO algorithms, every choice made when designing an online platform will have a greater or lesser impact on the website’s ranking. Whether it’s at the pre-design stage, when the UX/UI mock-up is being drawn up, or when the content marketing strategy is being rolled out, SEO must be taken into account as a minimum when decisions are being made.

Furthermore, the aim of referencing an online website is laudable, but the point is to publish information and share it. This information therefore needs to be visible. However, it is not easy, if not virtually impossible, to master the entire chain leading to optimal visibility on the web. And there are obvious reasons for this: the speed with which changes in the sector occur, the multi-factorial nature of content appreciation and the porous nature of information in terms of the criteria used to validate search engine preferences for online content.

However, a number of conditions have gradually come to be regarded as necessary, or even essential, for search engines to take content into consideration. These are the basics of SEO (Search Engine Optimization).

These different tips or best practices can be divided according to the phase in which they are applied. There are strategies for seo that come into play during the website design phase and others that need to be implemented during content creation.

The sheer number of areas, skills and situations in which SEO requires special attention can be daunting for anyone with a blog or online website that simply wants to present its content. That’s why a number of companies, entrepreneurs and developers have designed WordPress extensions to make strategies of seo accessible to as many people as possible.

What strategy SEO are easy to implement?

With a little more knowledge about SEO and the right tools, anyone can build on a basic foundation and go even further with their SEO.

There are a number of uses, practices and configurations that are considered to be the basics strategies of seo. They are becoming so crucial nowadays with the exacerbation of online competition that failure to respect them is a barrier to having an online presence. One way of describing them would be to divide them into three main phases.

The first of these is keyword management and highlighting keywords in the content of a website. This involves determining which words or phrases searched for online will be used to present content.

The second SEO foundation at hand is the informational and structural optimisation of content. Here, the aim is to improve the comfort, performance and presentation of the content in order to satisfy the needs of web users.

Finally, the last section is the indexing and internal and external mapping of an online platform. In other words, defining how the platform is structured and how it fits into the overall web schema.

These three branches of SEO are the targets of the majority of WordPress extensions designed for search engine optimisation. What’s more, they are the criteria by which you can judge whether one of these solutions is right for you. But before we look at some of the best on the market, let’s take a look at what a good WordPress SEO extension promises and what you can expect from it.

What are the criteria for a good SEO extension on WordPress?

1 – A healthy, dynamic ecosystem.

As with any other type of extension, the first criteria for judging the relevance of an extension are its high level of approval from other users, the frequency of updates, and the optimisation and performance of the tool itself.

It’s possible to get an opinion on these criteria without any technical expertise, by reading comments and doing some online research. It’s important to go through this stage to avoid coming across unstable solutions that could have repercussions for your website.

2 – Good advice, intuitive and easy to use.

The integration of the tool within your WordPress administration panel should be as intuitive as possible and offer easy-to-use interfaces that require no prior technical skills. When it comes to SEO, any potential collaborator on your platform needs to be able to understand and adopt good practice, which is why the tool in question needs to be as easy to use as possible.

In addition to a polished interface, the SEO tool must offer practical advice and explain SEO approaches in layman’s terms in order to help improve SEO over the medium and long term. To do this, the use of thumbnail advice and relevant technical indicators are the best way to provide understandable situational analyses for action.

3 – A keyword manager and macro visibility of targets.

One of the essential elements of a content marketing strategy is the list of keywords on which the website is positioned. That’s why a good SEO tool should be able to display the keyword choices made and the performance achieved for each of them.

An additional advantage would be to have macro visibility of the website’s performance in order to avoid duplication of keywords or a tendency to deal with a subject or theme not expected by the target community.

4 – Automatic or manual management of metadata elements.

Metadata is all the information needed to understand a piece of content. It can be information about the design, the content or its location. As part of an SEO strategy, the metadata to be implemented is that used by search engines to present your content. This is what is visible when the link to your content appears. A good SEO tool should be able to edit the metadata for each page of content.

More and more often, social networks are becoming crucial to SEO strategies. Since social networks are similar in the way they work when it comes to indexing content, we also find the notion of metadata for social networks. SEO extensions now offer a dedicated section.

5 – Take charge of site mapping and indexing.

When indexing a website, search engines are sensitive to its internal structure as well as the links that are made with the outside world. As far as the internal structure is concerned, the most important thing is to be able to control the elements that are added to the sitemap. This file maps the content of a website. Certain unnecessary elements should be banned from this file, which is what SEO tools make possible.

Another element to master for good SEO is redirects. If pages return 404 or 301 errors, the algorithms that visit the website to index it will penalise the platform if there are too many URLs with errors. An error manager can be used to inform you of the existence of faulty URLs and to remedy them.

Finally, when it comes to external mapping, most SEO tools can distribute index control tags such as noindex, dofollow, nofollow, etc. This allows you to configure the interactivity of your content with the web.

These five themes that a tool or collection of tools for SEO must support are the minimum requirements for implementing a stable structure for website referencing. Other elements are possible and valuable, but they should be considered in addition to the elements presented above.

Before presenting the solutions that are recommended as WordPress SEO plugins, a quick look at the preconceptions of SEO in the WordPress ecosystem seems relevant.

The myths surrounding SEO.

Good strategies for SEO doesn’t mean direct listing in the top 1!

The first disappointment with SEO is that even if all the best practices are put in place, there is no guarantee of phenomenal success overnight. In fact, as mentioned in the introduction, it is very difficult to estimate all the factors impacting search engine position.

It is therefore important to keep up to date with new developments as they appear, but also to follow the best practices validated by experts in the field. Good SEO does not guarantee good referencing, but what we do know is that the best referenced sites always have good SEO. So you need to put all the chances on your side.

No tool is indispensable and SEO is a practice with many solutions.

Unfortunately, no tool or extension can claim to offer optimal SEO that guarantees immediate success. What’s more, even if this were the case, as the tool becomes better known, its methods will tend to be regulated by the search engines. So there will never be a turnkey solution that can validate the entire SEO process for a website.

From a certain point of view, this is positive, as there is no obligation to use paid-for or specific tools in order to achieve quality SEO. Nevertheless, the more functionality a tool offers, the more time it will save by guaranteeing quality and speed of execution, and the greater the chances of good SEO.

The watchword in this situation is none other than respecting the standard SEO rules and making attempts and analysing the results over the medium to long term. It’s a frustrating approach, but one that everyone has to pay for.

Multiplying SEO extensions won’t increase your ranking.

Quite the opposite, in fact, as you run the risk of generating conflicts between the different extensions, and the performance of your website is likely to suffer as a result. What’s more, without any real reason, this can make your website heavier and less optimised for search engines.

It is advisable to have one main SEO tool, covering most of your needs, and to use small complementary extensions if certain functionalities are not present. But under no circumstances will a pharaonic list of extensions guarantee better results.

No tool can replace a clear strategy SEO and vision.

They are in fact a tool to help you build a clean platform according to SEO principles. Despite the numerous aids that extensions can provide, they will not be able to choose for you which content will be most relevant to your site, nor will they be able to compensate for all the development errors on a website.

As well as using these tools, you need to think ahead and have a clear vision of your objectives if you are to achieve good results.

The different types of extension for WordPress SEO.

Let’s get straight to the point. Now that we’ve listed the criteria and expectations you might have regarding an SEO extension for WordPress, which tool should you use? Here’s a list of the main choices currently available to WordPress users for handling SEO properly.

The list presents generic tools, these extensions are intended to be as complete as possible and the use of just one of them is recommended. This list is deliberately short because the entire catalogue of this type of extension is very similar from one offer to another. The comparison between them is mainly based on small competitive additions made by one or other.

Recommended extensions for WordPress SEO.

Yoast SEO – The giant still in the race.

For a long time, Yoast Seo has been at the forefront of the market, with the competition light on its feet and struggling to offer a service with the same level of functionality. Its interface is similar to the others, but for many it is their first encounter with a complete SEO support tool.

This is why it has a good reputation among web agencies and why many developers offer it as a referencing tool. It also has the advantage of being very easy to learn and use, as it is well known to all those involved in the web industry (developers, copywriters, etc.).

The free version of the tool is packed with features (content optimisation, redirection, metadata, etc.). It may be sufficient for small projects, and the free version is fully comprehensive.

The paid version offers improvements and additional tools. It includes dead link management, social network metadata editing and keyword suggestion.

Yoast SEO is therefore a good choice for those who don’t want to go into too much detail in their SEO strategy and are looking for an easy-to-use, comprehensive tool.

Rank Math – A huge choice of functions.

Rank Math is often referred to as Yoast SEO’s main competitor, as they have focused their product in response to the various shortcomings of the competition in terms of functionality. The choice of Rank Math extension is highly recommendable as it is without doubt one of the most comprehensive SEO tools, even in its free version. In fact, the free offer is probably the richest in the catalogue of SEO extensions. This is a deliberate choice by Rank Math to position itself on the market.

However, these can have a significant disadvantage for users new to SEO, as this large collection of parameters can seem very inaccessible to neophytes. This is a small negative point that the company responsible for the plugin tries to remedy with comprehensive articles and tutorials on their site.

Rank Math is the tool that was personally implemented in its Business version for this site, in particular for its keyword performance tracking and content AI functionalities. This professional tool recommends the best keywords for a target content using a dedicated algorithm.

The real advantage of this offer is the vision of a tool for the long term with automation, performance analysis and multiple functions for all use cases.

SEOPress – A comprehensive offering focused on support.

A little less well-known than the first two behemoths on this list, SEOpress nonetheless has a good reputation in the sector, with an attractive offer that is considerably cheaper than the competition.

You can opt for a free version, similar in functionality to the other offers, but with its own speciality for download files. SEOpress offers referencing tools for media such as PDF and DOCX documents, as well as download analyses that are extremely useful for platforms selling ebooks and dematerialised products.

The SEOpress package also offers access to a complementary tool, SEOpress Insights, which provides a complete analysis of your site’s keyword rankings and much more in-depth analysis tools than the other extensions. However, there is a charge for this tool, and its cost makes the complete package a little less attractive.

All in One SEO – A complete alternative for a low price.

With millions of downloads, AIOSEO is one of the SEO extensions that has managed to make a name for itself in the WordPress community. Its premium offer is very competitive with a fairly low cost, while offering a range of tools similar to other extensions on the market. This makes many pro SEO features affordable for small web projects.

The interface is similar to that of Rank Math, with an effort to make it simple and straightforward to use. This makes the extension a little more accessible for beginners, while still allowing a wide choice of parameters.

In the end, the choice between these four extensions or others is not strategically prohibitive. Each of them offers major functionalities for SEO. Yoast SEO may be better known among collaborators, Rank Math will offer several small exclusive features, SEO Press a more global ecosystem and AIOSEO, a more attractive offering for small budgets.
